Best Bitter

The legendary and uncompromising, Black Sheep Best Bitter.

We will always have a special place in our flock for this, our first ever brew. We dreamt of a perfect Yorkshire bitter - light amber, grassy fresh with a hoppy bite - and Best Bitter was born .

In the brewhouse, our passion for only the finest, quality ingredients, meets the Yorkshire Square fermenting system to create the ultimate session beer - a light, clean drinking and moreish pint with plenty of peppery hop.

Best Bitter is now one of the best-selling session beers in the country and by far the biggest selling beer we produce. We still stick to time-honoured techniques to create our Yorkshire classic, which is the Official Beer of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

We now also brew our Best Bitter for 50L kegs. The same beautifully crisp & quaffable beer filtered for freshness and packaged into kegs.

Peppery hop in the mouth with a long, bitter finish.

A classic well-hopped and beautifully balanced beer, with a deeply satisfying and refreshing taste that is followed by a distinctively dry and long bitter finish. Best enjoyed in true Black Sheep style, through a rich, creamy head.

Food Matches

Best bitter is the perfect accompaniment for tender, red meat. The bitter flavour of the Fuggle hop lends a peppery characteristic which really complements full flavoured meats like Yorkshire Beef or Lamb. Try a warming stew or pie filling with an added splash of Best Bitter.

We use Maris Otter malted barley, the ‘Rolls Royce’ of malts. Although more expensive, an impressive 9/10 blind taste tests will identify and prefer beers brewed with Maris Otter.

Best Bitter uses a blend of whole hops including Challenger and Progress, with Fuggles as the main variety which gives the beer its bite and characteristic nose.

We use a touch of wheat which helps deliver the lovely creamy head and lacing down the glass - just what you would expect from a proper Yorkshire beer!

Black Sheep is proud to support classic hop varieties.
