Black Sheep helps in the search for the Holy Grail
The search for the Holy Grail has seen devoted followers travel far and wide in their quest to find it but it seems that Pope Benedict XVI has found the answer at Black Sheep Brewery following his recent visit from the Archbishop of York who presented a bottle of Holy Grail Ale.
Before his recent visit to meet with the Pope, Archbishop John Sentamu contacted the brewery to arrange for some Holy Grail to be delivered to him so he could present it as a gift to celebrate his trip to Rome.
Paul Theakston, Managing Director of Black Sheep Brewery, said: ‘We were absolutely delighted, if not a little surprised, when we received the request from the Archbishop of York to provide the Pope with some of our Holy Grail Ale. As a local Yorkshire brewer we were thrilled to be supporting the Archbishop’s visit with a donation of our Holy Grail beer which was actually specially commissioned by the Pythons to commemorate their 30th anniversary.
‘We don’t imagine that his Holiness will be swapping holy water for Holy Grail just yet but to have him enjoy one of our favourite tipples is a real honour for the whole brewery and gives the Holy Grail Ale name a whole new meaning.’
The brewery has seen its Holy Grail Ale make appearances not only in Rome but in London and New York thanks to its association with the popular production of Spamalot, the musical based on the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And the fame doesn’t stop there. Actor John Cleese also recently had his hands on a bottle, after attending a special appearance at the Georgian Theatre in Richmond, sponsored by Black Sheep. What next for the Holy Grail, no-one knows, but the flock at Black Sheep Brewery are sure that it has plenty of miles to travel yet.
