Coldstream Guards March from Scotland to London via the Black Sheep Brewery

25 January 2010
Category: Brewery News

The Guardsmen took a well earned rest at the Black Sheep Brewery based in Masham as they marched through

Yorkshire and were given a reviving bottle of Black Sheep Ale to see them on their way.

The 100 soldiers are following in the footsteps of their colleagues by commemorating a march by General George Monck and a 6,000 strong army 350 years ago. They are taking up the challenge in order to raise awareness of the work being undertaken by the regiment in Afghanistan and to raise funds for their injured colleagues. Captain Mark Hayhurst, one of the organisers said: ‘350 years ago the General led an army out of Scotland and marched south for London. His trip took 34 days in severe weather conditions and with all the snow and ice of today we are finding out exactly how he felt. ‘We were delighted to receive an invitation from the Black Sheep Brewery who kindly offered us a much appreciated opportunity for refreshment.’The Coldstream Guards are today the only surviving regiment to have once been led by the famous General Monck.

Managing Director of the Black Sheep Brewery, Paul Theakston said: ‘We are very proud to be able to support the Coldstream Guards in their march. We heard about their challenge and thought that, after a long walk across the North Yorkshire Moors, a drink of Black Sheep could be just what they needed.’
