Aroma
Dominant citrus-fruit against malty background.
Taste
Dry and warming with hints of grapefruit and Demerara sugar and a long dry finish.
At 5% ABV Yorkshire Square Ale may have a kick, but it’s certainly not heavy. It’s a warming beer with hints of grapefruit and Demerara sugar, balanced against a rich malty background and followed by Black Sheep’s characteristic dry and refreshing finish.
Ingredients
To create the distinctive Yorkshire Square Ale flavour we use the superior Maris Otter malt, Demerara Sugar and a blend of hops – predominantly the Golding variety.
Demerara Sugar is key to the Yorkshire Square Ale taste. It provides a sweet and warming character which balances perfectly against the bitter hop undertones.
We use a touch of wheat which helps deliver the lovely creamy head and lacing down the glass - just what you would expect from a proper Yorkshire beer!
Label Artwork
We commissioned 2 original paintings by local and now internationally recognized artist Mackenzie Thorpe. The first was a large painting of the Square Black Sheep (named ‘Paul’ after our founder) and the second was a landscape of a red sky. We combined these artworks to create the bright, iconic label for Yorkshire Square Ale Bottles.
Did You Know…
At one point in the 19th century a large proportion of the Demerara sugar produced in the Caribbean was supplied to Yorkshire breweries?
At this time beer was taxed on malt content. By adding Demerara sugar, brewers could ensure their beer developed strength, flavour and body without giving as much away to the taxman.
Sadly the tax savings don’t apply today, but by using Demerara sugar in our brews today we are preserving another Yorkshire brewing tradition.
All our bottled ales are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.
